Finding Answers for the Rarest Cases: Bell's Journey with Canine Narcolepsy

When Bell first arrived at Mission Veterinary Emergency & Specialty’s Neurology Department, her family was searching for answers.

Like many young dogs, Bell loved to play. But during moments of excitement, something unusual would happen. Without warning, she would suddenly collapse for a few seconds before getting back up as though nothing had happened. The episodes were brief, unpredictable, and understandably alarming for her family.

After an initial evaluation by her primary care veterinarian, Bell was referred to board-certified veterinary neurologist Dr. David Weinstein for a more advanced neurologic evaluation.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

Neurologic conditions can be some of the most challenging disorders to diagnose. Many diseases share similar symptoms, making a thorough diagnostic workup and careful observation essential to reaching the correct diagnosis.

As Dr. Weinstein evaluated Bell’s history and closely reviewed the nature of her episodes, he began to suspect an extraordinarily rare condition: narcolepsy with cataplexy.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy is an uncommon neurologic disorder in dogs that causes sudden episodes of muscle weakness or collapse, often triggered by excitement, play, food, or strong emotions. Although the episodes can appear frightening, affected dogs typically remain conscious and recover quickly.

Because the condition is so rare, diagnosis often requires ruling out numerous other potential causes of collapse while carefully evaluating the patient’s history and clinical presentation.

A Journey of Patience and Partnership

Reaching a diagnosis was only the beginning.

Over the following months, Dr. Weinstein worked closely with Bell’s family to find the treatment plan that worked best for her. Medications were adjusted, her response was carefully monitored, and other potential causes continued to be ruled out. Throughout the process, ongoing communication between Bell’s family and the Neurology team ensured that every decision was made with Bell’s long-term quality of life in mind.

Cases like Bell’s remind us that veterinary medicine is rarely about finding instant answers. Sometimes it requires persistence, collaboration, and a willingness to continually reassess until the right solution is found.

Enjoying Life Again

Today, Bell still experiences occasional episodes, but they are significantly better controlled. Thanks to individualized treatment and dedicated follow-up care, she is able to spend more time doing what every young dog deserves—playing, eating, and enjoying life with the family who loves her.
