Chadwick's Journey: The Power of Specialized Care
July 2, 2025 · Case Study

We are honored to share our first-ever oncology patient story. Meet Chadwick, an incredibly brave 11-year-old mixed-breed dog whose medical journey has captured the hearts of our team.
Diagnosed with not one, but two serious conditions, Chadwick’s case represents the intricate balance of managing multiple health challenges with both precision and compassion.
An Unexpected Turn: The Cancer Diagnosis
Chadwick was referred to our Oncology service, led by Dr. Brian Flesner, after his family noticed an unusual skin mass. He was diagnosed with cutaneous hemangiosarcoma—a malignant tumor that originates from the cells lining blood vessels. While some of these tumors can be treated easily with surgery, Chadwick’s had invaded deeper tissue layers, raising concern for potential metastasis.
Before beginning treatment, Chadwick underwent full staging diagnostics, including chest x-rays, abdominal ultrasound, and an echocardiogram to check his heart. It was during this process that a second, unrelated condition was discovered.
A Heart Diagnosis Revealed
Chadwick’s echocardiogram, performed as part of his cancer staging, revealed signs of Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD)—a common form of heart disease in older dogs that causes the mitral valve to become thickened and leaky. This backflow of blood can lead to congestive heart failure (CHF) if left untreated.
Our cardiologist, Dr. Shane Murphy, evaluated Chadwick and determined that his heart was in Stage B2, meaning there was moderate enlargement of the left atrium but no current signs of heart failure. Thanks to early detection, he was started on a key heart medication:
Pimobendan (Vetmedin) – To strengthen the heart and slow disease progression
Though surgical valve repair is an option for advanced cases, Chadwick’s condition is well-managed with medication at this time.
Targeted Treatment: Chemotherapy with a Heart-Focused Plan
To reduce the risk of metastasis, Chadwick began chemotherapy with doxorubicin, a powerful and commonly used drug in canine oncology for treating hemangiosarcoma. Unfortunately, a side effect of this drug is cardiotoxicity, stressing the importance of the Pimobendan prescription, which ensured his heart was well-supported prior to and during the chemo treatment.
Thanks to the seamless collaboration between our oncology and cardiology teams, Chadwick’s treatment plan was carefully customized to address both his cancer and his underlying heart condition, balancing effectiveness with safety and prioritizing his overall quality of life.
Chadwick also went home with a carefully managed medication plan, including:
Cerenia – To prevent nausea
Metronidazole – To support his gastrointestinal system
Pimobendan – Continued heart support
He’ll return in three weeks for routine bloodwork and his next dose of chemotherapy.
Moving Forward with Strength
Despite the challenges of MMVD and hemangiosarcoma, Chadwick continues to thrive. His story is a shining example of what’s possible when multiple specialties unite to deliver compassionate, coordinated care.
We are so proud to support sweet Chadwick throughout his medical journey!
